First and foremost, Sam Steele is a husband, father, and family man.
Steele lives in Key West with his wife, Lauren Talbott-Steele, a sixth-generation Florida Keys resident, their two-year old old son, Carter, and newborn daughter, Audrey, both seventh-generation Florida Keys residents.
Steele is a graduate of Florida State University and focused his studies in financial accounting and marketing. He decided to follow in his late grandfather's footsteps, Clifford George Steele, who served as the Tax Assessor for the Borough of Paramus in Bergen County, New Jersey for 25 years, Police Commissioner, School Board, Councilman, and Finance Committee, among other municipal positions. Public service is a passion of his.
Steele currently serves as Tax Manager at the Monroe County Tax Collector’s Office. He is certified through the Florida Department of Revenue as a Certified Florida Collector Assistant (CFCA) and has also obtained the Tax Collector Certified Professional (TCCP) designation through the Florida Tax Collectors Association Virtual Resource Network. His duties as Tax Manager include reporting directly to the Tax Collector and working in each department to assist in the daily operations.
Steele has knowledge of the many aspects of the office operations; from running the mail room to preparing the budget and balancing the $300 million annual property tax roll with the Tax Collector; from attending Board of Directors meetings with other Florida Tax Collectors at a state-level to organizing educational conferences for all of Florida’s 67 Tax Collectors and staff.
Steele will be a hands-on Tax Collector. He is able to work the front-counter, tourist development tax, hunting and fishing licenses, concealed weapon permits, vehicle/vessel title work, local business and tangible tax, current and delinquent property tax, tax certificate sales, budget preparation, and more.
Prior to his employment with the Tax Collector’s Office, Steele was a commercial real estate appraiser for Cushman & Wakefield, a multi-billion dollar firm. As an appraiser, Steele was responsible for creating budgets and projecting 10-year cash flows for multi-million dollar properties on a daily basis.
As Tax Collector, he will continue integrating new technology, which is constantly evolving, to ensure the public will continue to be provided the same timely access to information and the professional level of service they have become accustomed to. He recently redesigned and is the administrator of the office website, runs the social media for the office, and has attended meetings with other Tax Collectors who are developing a mobile app, which will provide select services on mobile devices.
Steele was mentored on how to lead this office. Along with this knowledge and experience, he will provide quality leadership skills, accountability, and commitment to this office and community. There have only been two Tax Collectors during the past 50 years and along with the dedication of his co-workers, THAT has been the key to the success of this office. He pledges to keep this office running as efficiently and fiscally responsible as it historically has been. He will make sure Monroe County continues to receive millions of dollars in excess fees every year.
This will not be a short-term position. He is raising his family here and has his entire career ahead of him. Steele is here to serve the public for the long term.
Let’s continue the legacy of this office by electing Sam Steele for Monroe County Tax Collector.
